Household Tips

  • Check air pressure in tires for better gas mileage.
  • Clean or replace heating filters.
  • Remove hoses from outside faucets to protect from freezing
  • Use video camera to record your valuables for security
  • Place a sheet of bounce inside pillow case to keep bedding smelling fresh.
  • Fertilize houseplants with Sure Bloom.

Lawn and Garden Tips

  • Apply Hummert Long Lasting Dyna Green fertilizer.
  • Apply Broadleaf weed control if necessary - Use Gordon's Speedzone with Spreader Sticker added or Bonide Weed Beater Ultra (already contains spreader sticker)
  • Roses: after they are done blooming trim back to no less than three feet.
  • Mulch roses at the end of the month with medium to coarse bark one foot up in a pyramid shape.
  • This is the best time to plant trees. Trees planted in the fall can gain one year growth over trees planted in the spring.
  • Water in newly planted trees with Mushroom Stuff. Mix 2tbl per gallon of water.
  • Two weeks after planting , apply Earth Right from trunk out 4 to 5 feet to loosen soil and to help tree root.
  • Stake and mulch new trees 2 to 3 inches deep. Keep mulch from touching trunk.
  • Water newly planted trees once per week.
  • Plant tulip bulbs or any spring flowering bulbs.
  • Fertilize sring flowering bulbs with Hummert Flower and Garden with Nutri-Life fertilizer.
  • Feed peonies one cup bone meal after foliage is cut down.
  • Perennials, especially spring flowering ones can be divided now. Till or spade in cotton burr compost when replanting.
  • Take cuttings of annuals for over wintering indoors.
  • Harvest winter squash and pumpkin before frost. For best storage quality, leave an inch or two of stem on each fruit
  • A few degrees of frost protection may be gained by covering tender plants with sheets of light-weight fabric row covers.
  • Persimmons start to ripen especially after a frost.
  • Transplant deciduous trees once they have dropped their leaves.
  • Keep leaves raked off lawn to prevent smothering of grass.
  • Spray Box Elder Bugs with insecticidal soap. If they persist also spray with Triazicide.
  • Continue to monitor for Grub damage. Use Dylox if necessary.
